Japan and the United States have agreed to enter trade talks that could end with a bilateral trade deal between the two economic super powers. What is the Agriculture community hoping to get from the talks?
Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue said he wants a “sweet deal” like the European Union was given. Back in July, the two sides signed a trade deal that removes tariffs on many European products such as wine and cheese. Perdue said the United States has been a better alley to Japan that the EU, thus American farmers should get the same, if not a better deal.
“We think we’ve been wonderful allies we’ve been great protectionists of Japan, and their country for many years. Why don’t you treat us like you treat other people? And that’s what we would want,” Perdue noted.
